Midigama Fruit Farm was established in 1996 under visionary leadership of Michel Vass Gunawardena who was recognized as an Ecological farming pioneer in small island, Sri Lanka. Since beginning, Agroecology concept was implemented by utilizing traditional three canopy multi cropping system (Kandyan garden concept) of growing tropical fruits under the primary social crop coconut in a traditional village in Midigama. The diversified plant systems with in compacted physical space entails richness of biodiversity, enhance water-soil health & fertility, conserve and protect soil, ecological pest control, and finally leading to sustainable ecological agriculture.
In addition, the village based eco-farming of Midigama Fruit Farm recognized as a sustainable model of agri-business in the region. Midigama fruit farm helps to conserve environment, improve regional economies, upgrade livelihoods of villages, develop supply chain linkages with small holdings enterprises, contribute socio-economic growth, offer solution to regional food security, assist to eliminate malnutrition, empower women employments through resurgence of the eco system.
